Silent Cinema

from German Films Quarterly Issue 01/2008

"In the past decade, contemporary filmmakers in Germany have made several interesting attempts to investigate the early days of their medium. These projects’ diversity of ambition and style enables us to conclude that the era of silent film – a period of around 35 years, after all – is no longer seen as a monolithic block, but that a fine awareness of the wealth of facets in this epoch has developed. Preferences and dislikes are played out with cheerful presumption, for example in Andreas Krein’s prize-winning short film homage Nuts & Bolts (Hochbetrieb) from 2003. [...] Nuts & Bolts has enjoyed an impressive international career, receiving a Special Mention in the international short film competition at the Venice International Film Festival and the Short Tiger Award at the Munich Film Festival. In addition, it was honored with a gala screening in the New York Museum of Modern Art.

Kinski Revisited

digital
My work as director on the trailer to KINSKI REVISITED - the imaginary yet affordable next motion picture starring Klaus Kinski (1926 - 1991)
- was discussed in detail at FMX. Unsurprisingly, the licence to use the copyrighted background material was denied by Werner Herzog Film GmbH. Unfortunately, however, the master himself - Herzog - didn't see the work. Only the private screening arranged for technology-savvy Roland Emmerich produced the wanted elation. I was neither surprised nor miffed by this! “In 400 years, I’ll overtake Terminator”. I love this statement by Herzog. And repugnance in the face of digital recreations (recreatures) is all too understandable and common. See stern.de. Davy Jones worked in every aspect. He never lived to begin with. But then again who does? : P

A montage. Crusted gnome.

Btw. "Nuts & Bolts"/"Hochbetrieb" still gets screened at film festivals. In terms of festival attendance it belongs to the Filmakademie's Top Ten.

Only a photo

The photo you see here is of a picture that was printed on paper which won´t allow ink to dry. I daubed the ink and dispersed salt on it. Lastly I laid the sheet outside to dry. Alas, it rained that night...
and the sheet was paper white in the morning.
